Love at first sight in Notting Hill: do you know the alternative ending?

Love at first sight in Notting Hill: the cult romantic comedy

Published in August 1999, Love at first sight in Notting Hill quickly established itself as an essential reference in the romantic comedy genre. Brought by Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, this film was able to conquer the hearts of millions of viewers around the world. It tells the surreal (but sympathetic) story of a famous Hollywood actress, Anna Scott, and a modest London bookseller, William Thacker. Their chance meeting in the picturesque Notting Hill neighborhood gives rise to a love story that is as touching as it is funny.

This irresistible duo of actorssurrounded by picturesque supporting actors (the eccentric Spike for starters) and cult scenes, makes this film directed by Roger Michell a classic that we never tire of seeing again.

The year of its release, the film rose to fifth place in the film charts French box office for a total of over four and a half million entries.

Do you know the alternate ending?

After multiple adventures inherent in their diametrically opposed universes, Anna and William end up reunited Really. The film ends with their wedding, then with a final shot showing the two lovers on “their” bench, with Anna’s round belly. A perfect ending, which was almost different.

In fact, as revealed in the bonuses of the video edition of Love at first sight in Notting Hill, an alternative conclusion was filmed. It takes place in the (full) restaurant of their friend Tony, who has finally found success. Around the table, Anna, William, Honey, Bella and Max are sharing a meal when a little boy comes forward to ask Anna for an autograph. That’s when Max asks William what life as a star is like, to which he replies that it’s complicated sometimes, but it’s worth it when you’re in love.

This alternate ending offers a different perspective on the couple’s life after their union, highlighting the challenges they face due to Anna’s notoriety. It also highlights the importance of friendship and support from loved ones in their relationship.
