Presence: the new Steven Soderbergh presented at Sundance
For more than three decades, Steven Soderbergh has been one of the most interesting directors in American independent cinema. After his coronation for Sex, lies and videos in 1989, has consistently pushed the boundaries of cinematic storytelling, venture into various genres, ranging from thriller to biopic, science fiction and drama. Above all, she wants to experiment and take risks, as in her thriller Paranoia in 2018, shot in 10 days with an iPhone.
A year after the release of the last part of the trilogy magical MikeSteven Soderbergh presented his new feature film, Presence, at the very famous Sundance film festival in the United States. Every year, it is an unmissable event for all lovers of American independent cinema.
Most notably directed by Lucy Liu, the film is a haunting closed session set in a beautiful 100-year-old house. It is in this setting that the inhabitants are prey to supernatural phenomena, which suggest the presence of a ghost.
The spectators leave the cinema
According to a recent article by Variety, who attended the film’s world premiere at Sundance, this screening made me break out in a cold sweat! Indeed, the spectators all seemed glued to their seats (including the film crew), and some people even left the room, due to the excessively anxious atmosphere of the film. One spectator even whispered “I can’t handle stress like that this late at night” before leaving the scene.
After the session, Lucy Liu, still in shock, appeared and said:
My body reacts strangely, as if I’m not in the movie!
According to initial feedback, the film would have been shot from the point of view of the ghost, and not of his “victims”.
We also learn that Steven Soderbergh, who is also the film’s director of photography, used unusual angles and a unique approach to manufacturing. He filmed the entire film with a 14mm ultra-wide-angle lens. Another curiosity is that Soderbergh chose not to make any camera movements to frame the protagonist or change perspective.
Presence was written by David Koepp, notably screenwriter of Jurassic Park, Mission Impossible, War of the Worlds OR Panic room.
The film does not yet have a release date in France.
