Scarlett Johansson copied from OpenAI
We can write it in full: “reality surpassed fiction“. Actress Scarlett Johansson, one of the most powerful figures in the Hollywood industry, released a statement, sent to Variety, to express his shock and anger over the creation of an entry for OpenAI’s GPT-4o chatbot, called “Sky.” A voice that, if it is not his, is an almost perfect imitation.
When I heard the demonstration, I was shocked, angry, and incredulous that Mr. Altman had developed a voice so eerily similar to mine that my closest friends and the media couldn’t tell the difference.
Its lawyers asked OpenAI to remove this entry from their artificial intelligence program, which the company co-founded by Sam Altman and Elon Musk did. But what happened?
In her press release, Scarlett Johansson covers the whole story. In September 2023, Scarlett Johansson was contacted by Sam Altman. He then offered to lend his voice to the ChatGPT 4.0 system. Which, according to the head of OpenAI, could help bring the technology industry and the creative industry closer together, as well as satisfy users.
After reflection, the actress refuses. Her surprise is therefore great, and bad, when this month a “demo” voice is broadcast with a voice almost identical to hers. He notes in his press release that, on May 13, 2024, at the same time as the unveiling of the new ChatGPT 4.0 iteration, Sam Altman posted a single word on X (formerly Twitter): “his“. Scarlett Johansson writes:
Mr. Altman even implied that the resemblance was intentional, tweeting a single word, “she,” in reference to the film in which I play a feline system, Samantha, who forms an intimate relationship with a human.
Like in the Spike Jonze film
Two days before this presentation, representatives of OpenAI contacted those of Scarlett Johansson, so that she could reconsider their offer. There is no time to answer: the voice similar to hers comes on the air. The reference to the film His by Spike Jonze, in which the actress lends her voice to an artificial intelligence with which the protagonist played by Joaquin Phoenix falls in love, is obvious and even hypothesized by Sam Altman.

Scarlett Johansson has therefore asked her lawyers to take action to ensure that this entry is removed from the system. Through a press release, Sam Altman reacted: “Sky’s voice is not Scarlett Johansson’s and was never intended to sound like her. We recruited Sky’s voice actor before contacting Ms. Johansson. Out of respect for Ms Johansson, we have stopped using Sky’s voice in our products. We apologize to Ms. Johansson for not communicating better.”
A very unpleasant surprise for the actress, who sees in it the perfect example of the defects and damage caused by this new technology. She concludes her press release thus:
At a time when we are all dealing with “deepfakes” and protecting our image, our work, our identity, I believe these issues deserve absolute clarity. I look forward to a solution in the form of transparency and the adoption of appropriate legislation to help ensure the protection of individual rights.
