To date, of the 75 Palme d’Or awarded since 1955 at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, ten French films have received it. The silent world in 1956, Orfeu Negro in 1959, Cherbourg umbrellas in 1964, A man and a woman in 1966, Under Satan’s sun in 1987, Between the walls in 2008, The life of Adèle – chapters 1 and 2 in 2013, Dheepan in 2015, Titanium in 2021 and Anatomy of a fall in 2023.

Among these ten films, one is a pure documentary: The silent world. And another intensely blurs the lines between documentary work and fictional work: Between the walls. Indeed, this, adapted from the novel of the same name by François Bégaudeau, recounts the writer’s experiences as a teacher in an ZEP in Paris. François Bégaudeau himself plays the professor in the film, renamed François Marin. Only two young people from the student cast, then all beginners in front of the camera, pursued acting careers: Louise Grinberg (Louise) and Rabah Naït Oufella (Rabah).

François Marin is a young French teacher in a class 4And at a college known for being difficult 20And neighborhood of Paris. He will have to “face” his students: Esméralda, Souleymane, Khoumba and the others. François does not hesitate to go beyond the academic framework and push teenagers to the limit to motivate them, even if sometimes this means running the risk of excess.
