Anne Hathaway, 43, has hit back at trolls who accused her of faking her pregnancy, days after she was mocked online for a "ridiculous" maternity outfit at a film premiere.
On Monday, the Oscar winner posted a behind-the-scenes video montage to Instagram, writing in the caption: "Fake hair, real bump. Enjoy The @endofoakstreet Block Party chaos with me as my outfit literally melts in the heat!!"
In the footage, Hathaway is attended to by a glam squad, including a stylist who secures a hairpiece to volumize her ponytail as she says, "It's not my hair."
Hathaway attended the Los Angeles premiere of her new film, The End of Oak Street, over the weekend, baring her midriff months after announcing that she and husband Adam Shulman are expecting their third child.
Fans accuse her of wearing a prosthetic bump
The premiere appearance sparked a wave of comments on TikTok accusing Hathaway of wearing a prosthetic baby bump. "Why does it look fake?" asked one user, in a comment that collected nearly 6,000 likes. Another wrote, "It does look fake. There's body makeup on it."
Other fans defended the actress, saying her stomach looks different from other pregnant women's because she is in great shape. "It looks different because she was already fit and probably continues to work out, so she is all muscle and baby!" one fan wrote. Another commented on Hathaway's Instagram post, "The fact that other women were questioning her literal pregnant belly because 'mine didn't look like that' is so strange to me."
Maternity outfit draws criticism
Hathaway had already been trolled for the outfit itself: a custom baby blue high-low Prabal Gurung halter top made of silk with a floor-grazing train, paired with low-rise jeans from La Ligne's Jenny. One critic wrote that the outfit "looks ridiculous," another said, "This one is so wrong, sorry," and a third wrote, "Jeans? JEANS?! That dazzling top deserves a better companion."
Third pregnancy announced this summer
Hathaway announced earlier this summer that she was expecting her third child at 43. She shares sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, six, with Shulman, whom she married in 2012.
Appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers in July, Hathaway said of learning she was pregnant: "I mean, we knew what we were doing, but we were so shocked it worked!.. We were so shocked it went this way." She described the pregnancy as a "buzzer beater."
Speaking to Access Hollywood about becoming pregnant in her 40s, Hathaway said, "There's always hope until there's not, but when you get to a certain age, that hope looks like 1% to 2%. So we just decided to see where life took us, with a very, very healthy, realistic expectation, which was very low." She added, "We're overjoyed because we just know from personal experience that not everybody gets this, and certainly not when you want it, sometimes not ever."
