Spanish musician Leiva paused his concert at the Movistar Arena in Madrid on Tuesday night to address a fan who recently lost vision in one eye, sharing his own personal experience of living with single-eye sight since childhood.
The performance marked the first of four scheduled nights at the Movistar Arena in the Spanish capital to conclude his Gigante Tour, named after his latest studio album, Gigante. The venue in central Madrid is one of Spain's major indoor concert arenas, and the overall tour cycle has drawn more than 350,000 attendees across its nationwide dates.
Between songs during the show, Leiva took a moment to tell the audience about a fan named Gu. The singer explained that he had been informed about the fan's recent loss of vision in one eye and was told that Gu would be attending one of the Madrid concert dates, adding that he hoped the fan was present that evening.
Drawing from his own life, Leiva told the crowd that living without an eye is exactly the same as living with two. He remarked that in the modern world, two eyes provide too much information, saying that living with one eye is very good and describing the pirate life as beautiful. He wished the fan good luck, said they were in this together, and sent a hug to Gu.
Childhood Accident and Eye Injury
Leiva has previously detailed the accident that caused him to lose vision in his left eye. Speaking on the YouTube channel Farid y Diego during promotion for his album Cuando te muerdes el labio, the former member of the popular Madrid pop-rock duo Pereza explained that the injury occurred when he was 12 years old.
The singer recounted that he suffered two accidents in close succession. As a very restless child, he was initially admitted to the hospital with a broken arm after falling off a skateboard. While at the hospital, he suffered a second accident involving a pellet gun, which immediately caused him to lose sight in his left eye.
The musician noted that the event was deeply traumatic for his parents, but less so for him at the time. He explained that as a young boy, he could not process the loss of three-dimensional vision because he only wanted to get out of the hospital to play ball and live his life.
Impact on Music and Career
Looking back with the perspective of time, Leiva acknowledged that the injury left a profound mark on both his life and his musical output. During his recovery, visual limitations prevented him from taking part in certain activities, forcing him to channel his restless energy into patience.
That period of forced calm allowed him to connect with music at an early age. His early involvement in music eventually led to his commercial breakthrough as part of Pereza and later as a successful solo artist.
