Have you ever noticed that supermarkets don’t have any display windows, except for the ones at the front of the store?
It turns out that this architectural element appeared for a reason – the premises are deliberately planned in this way for several reasons.
Reason One: It’s Easier to Store Food This Way
Some products can deteriorate if exposed to the sun: for example, in Germany, where attempts were made to build supermarkets with display windows, some gingerbreads literally melted under ultraviolet light. But even if the product itself is not in danger, its label will fade, making it less likely that a packet of biscuits or a packet of spaghetti will be purchased even if their expiration date is correct.
Second reason: it is easier to present products this way.
Windows will reduce the space that can be used to display products. In addition, explains architect Marjean Biswas, the exterior walls have solid structural supports, allowing shelves to hold heavy objects.

Third reason: windows are expensive
Much, much more expensive than a regular wall – especially if you insert special glass in the windows that reduces the effects of heat and ultraviolet rays. It’s no surprise that retailers who prefer to save on construction costs prefer to go without windows.
Fourth and main reason: it encourages you to buy more.
If stores had windows, it would distract visitors from shopping, but their absence would keep people inside longer. “Supermarket owners want to create a special indoor environment in which the outside world ceases to exist. You are not distracted by the rain, the approaching evening or the view of the parking lot where the children are waiting in the car for your return. All your impressions will be focused on purchases and you will probably make a lot more of them,” says psychologist and shopping behavior expert Andrei Vasilescu.
So the next time you go to the supermarket, take with you a list of what you need to buy, and also set an alarm so you don’t waste too much time – all this will help you avoid buying too much.
