The Pope praises the French island because it has many children and few dogs

“Have children, because they will be your joy”, he asked

Pope Francis praised this Sunday (15th) the people of Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean Sea, for having many children and few dogs.

He stated this during a one-day visit to Ajaccio, the capital and largest city on the island, which received a pontiff for the first time in history.

“I have never seen so many children as here, and I have only seen two puppies. Dear brothers, have children, because they will be your joy and your consolation for the future,” the Pope said during a mass in Corsica.

It is not the first time that the leader of the Catholic Church compares children to pets to allude to the so-called “demographic winter”, a reality common to many Western countries with declining birth rates.

In November 2023, during a meeting with earthquake victims in Italy, Francisco underlined the alleged risks of “veterinary culture”; already in May 2024 he complained that “there is never a shortage of dogs and cats” in homes, while “there is a shortage of children” due to “selfishness, consumerism and individualism that make people lonely and unhappy”.

In September he mentioned the issue again and praised the Indonesian people for having “three, four, five children.”

“Continue like this, you are an example for everyone. Some families prefer to have a cat, a puppy and not a child.

It’s not right,” he stressed.

Last year the Pope also rebuked a woman who asked him to bless a dog. “So many hungry kids and you with a puppy,” she said at the time. .
