Singer has been promoting his TV special for 50 years, but the project’s continuity would be at risk; contract expires in March 2025
As reported, the special Roberto Carlos for the TV Globo in 2024 it will seek to celebrate 50 years of the partnership between the singer and the broadcaster — hence the name RC50. For this, the promise is of a complete musical journey through the artist’s trajectory of more than six decades.
The attraction was recorded on November 27th, at Allianz Parque, in São Paulo. Participated Zeca Pagodinho, Wanderlea, Chitãozinho & Xororó, Paulo Ricardo, Roberto Frejat, João Barone, Sophie Charlotte, Letícia Colin and Dira Paes. An unprecedented collaboration with the Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli was also presented.
But what comes next? It is known that the musician did not renew his contract with the TV channel. The current agreement continues until March 2025 and, according to a report by Danilo Casaletti for the newspaper The State of S. Paulothere is still no agreement to extend the link — and the artist may even hear proposals from other broadcasters and streaming platforms.
The reason is a little different from what was expected. Sources interviewed by the publication state that the debate does not revolve around a possible reduction in the values of the agreement, but rather the “fixed formats” — an expression used by the report — from which Roberto, musically active even at 83 years old, would be wanting to get rid of.
Another point of possible disagreement is related to something that happened to an artist who is also a veteran of the station. According to Estadão, Roberto “seems to be unwilling to accept conditions like the one imposed on actor Antonio Fagundes, who decided not to renew with Globo after realizing that the broadcaster would take away his right not to record on weekends, days when he performs on theater”.
Still, the newspaper points out that the old relationship between the singer and the broadcaster weighs heavily on the renewal. When contacted by the media outlet, director Amauri Soares stated that Globo presented a format considered “ideal” and that the expectation is for renewal.
In August, journalist Daniel Castro published on the website TV News that, after 2024, the special would be discontinued, despite the maintenance of the contractual relationship. Soares’ statement seems to go against this investigation.
Roberto Carlos’ special
Since 1974, Roberto Carlos’ special has been produced annually by TV Globo. The television attraction consists of a show by the singer to be shown on the network in the last days of December. There are usually appearances from other music icons, rising stars and even actors and actresses. Names like Erasmo Carlos, Ivete Sangalo, Caetano Veloso, Alcyone, Tim Maia, Chico Buarque, Xuxa Meneghel, Lulu Santos, Isis Valverde, Rita Lee and Claudia Raia were some of the guests from past editions.
Since its debut, the program has only stopped being produced twice. The first occasion occurred in 1999, when the health of Roberto’s then wife worsened, Maria Rita. She passed away on December 19 of that year, at the age of 38, due to cancer. The second took place in 2020, due to the covid-19 pandemic. In this case, a replay of the artist’s show in Jerusalem, recorded in 2011, was shown.
