The artists share the first night of the Summer Festival, in Salvador, which starts this Saturday
the intimacy between Ney Matogrosso And Creole it is not the daily routine of visiting friends. It happens, above all, through art. It has been like this since Criolo immediately saw Ney, play a role in the film. Light in the Dark – Return of the Red Light Bandit, 2012, in which the singer starred. An idol he admired from afar, shy.
Soon after, it was Ney’s turn to understand Criolo when he recorded his song Midnight shopper. When they sang the song together in a concert 10 years ago, they gave an apotheotic performance. Criolo, with full understanding of what that partnership was, cursed Ney. The singer returned the insults with his body and singing. They repeated the sharing on stage several times.
This Saturday, 28, Ney is a guest of Criolo in his presentation at Salvador Summer Festivalwhich returns this year after the break caused by the pandemic with precisely this feature: each artist will receive a special guest.
THE Stage found out at the suggestion of the manufacturer Ze Ricardo, consultant of the festival, the meeting will be a tribute to the trajectory of Ney. The singer will go on stage to sing at least four songs with Criolo. The candidates are the flagships The man with h And Latin blood and two from the tour Ney is currently touring with: I want to put my block on the street And Gardens of Babylon.
In conversation with the journalist of the Estadao, through the video, Ney and Criolo talked about the artistic bond between them, they enjoyed remembering the performance of Midnight shopper and on the relationship with the public, which increasingly fills festivals throughout the country.
Ney, when you, in the past, sang with Criolo the song Freguês da Meia Noite, in a performance on stage, he cursed you with different names, said insults. You told me at the time that it made you very “exciting”…
Ney – I liked it (Criolo and Ney laugh). The more she cursed at me, the more excited I got. In my head, of course. I like it so much that today (the day the interview was granted) I went to watch the video again. When he starts yelling those things, I’m laughing alone in the house.
creole – “Improperty” …. Appreciated! I feel now on that stage. I looked at Ney… I was so happy, so happy. I thought “I know you (Ney) he’s crazy, you have to tell me everything”. He, in the middle of the song, said: now, you’ll see. When we are on stage and this chimera happens, art boils in everyone. It’s something that doesn’t “Don’t ask permission, it happens. And, when we come to see it, this stage is the place for hugs, greetings, from everyone. I only provoked as I felt very welcome.
You had a relationship on stage that maybe doesn’t happen that often or that intensely.
Ney – From the beginning I liked Criolo.
creole – This happens within a place where we get along if we want to. It’s not “go out there and do whatever you want”.
Elis Regina said that the stage and the bed are sacred places, that we must share only with those who have a lot in common with us. Quite right?
creole – Yes, we don’t always have such happiness. Elis was of such absurd size that even getting close to her was energetically difficult. We didn’t even get to the back doors, let alone enter the living room until we found the “bed”.
Ney – I must have a league to share the stage.
Criolo, how did Ney, an artist so free, arrive in his “quebrada”, or in the “quebradas”, places where we know that people and their art are often suffocated?
The art that Ney delivers to his people, the art that I see, which perhaps is not the same as the one he emanates – because the art of those who execute it is a fraction of this energy – is the one that makes all that possible What do you want. And all you want after being seen is freedom. We were born pruned. We have left the womb, the gate of heaven, already shrunk. And Ney is freedom. Whatever social cut you want to take, Ney has unique tentacles that unite a Brazil jersey, in the great Brazil variations.
Ney, were you concerned about delivering that message to the public?
I have always transgressed this restriction. I’ve never respected that – on stage, because in life I don’t need it. I just did, I didn’t even know what it was. I just didn’t want to be the crooner of a band at first – I’m talking about Secos & Molhados. In the last rehearsal, at the venue where we were going to perform for the first time, I asked what my space would be. I was told “it’s that square foot”. So, I said: here I will do what I want. They agreed, but they didn’t know what I was going to do. And neither do I. I realized that my ways have shocked many people. I thought “but you haven’t seen anything yet! I haven’t hatched yet!”. I did barbarities that I didn’t even know where they came from. I tested how far I could go. I was aggressive, because if I wasn’t, they’d be the ones with me.
Have you ever been afraid of the public?
Once, in a club in São Paulo, part of the audience started insulting me before I sang Rose of Hiroshima. Look what a wrong time! I made a nice pose of someone saying “ah ok”. They continued. I told everyone to take the… When I did, the other part of the audience started to applaud me. At that precise moment I realized that I could not be afraid of them. There was the Objetivo festival, also in São Paulo, which only had absurd, extremely aggressive people. When I arrived to play a show, they started throwing balls of paper at me. I turned around and started shaking. A guy from the audience came out of the crowd and spat at me. I spat back. He said he’d get on stage and beat my ass. I sang South America, who opened the show, with an ox jaw in hand. I replied “get up here and I’ll break your skull”. Which, nowadays, is very far from me. What I want is to stroke. I don’t want to offend anyone.
And be caressed, as happens in his concerts, by all types of audience…
Ney – I don’t have a specific audience. Many children go. Lots of seniors. I’ve always appreciated older audiences. When I did the show The Adventurer’s Destiny (1984) had a 90-year-old woman who ran away from home with her great-grandson to see me. I’m not going to (jobs) only for a young audience. Young people, if they want to get close to me, are also welcome.
creole – Ney’s show is life! Happiness. Ney is invigorating. Ney has this trait of crossing time. And she comes at this time to celebrate all that is affectionate.
The Summer Festival has a very diverse audience. On the same day you perform, artists such as Ivete Sangalo, Gil, Caetano, Ferrugem will also take the stage. What will this show be like?
creole – I feel graced by this mix. This group of people I love. We are all together, embraced. People are issues, they are motivations. It’s gonna be damn hot. May Salvador know that he will receive a meeting of much love. My presence and that of Ney say a lot about Brazil.
Ney – And in Bahia, which has wonderful people, something that inspires you. Singing in Salvador is a wave unlike anything else. I am impressed because in this round of shows there are many festivals and all sold out! The public is hungry for music. It’s wonderful to be back in a more relaxed Brazil.
