The Ice Menace: What is the new Ghostbusters movie about?
Three years later Ghostbusters: Legacythe most famous spirit hunters on the planet return once again to the big screen in a new film entitled The threat of ice. Directed by Gil Kenan (at the helm of the remake of Poltergeist) and screenwriter of the previous work, this new film is set this time at the origins of the saga, in New York, when Callie Spengler (Carrie Coon), her daughter Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), her son Trevor (Finn Wolfhard), and her partner Gary (Paul Rudd), were reinstated the famous ghost hunting barracks. Alongside them are still the old glories of the saga, played by Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson (as well as other figures well known to fans, who make their appearance in this new part).
This fourth chapter of the cult saga that began in 1984 (if we don’t take into account Paul Feig’s female reboot released in 2016) begins with a distressing flashback, in which we discover an imposing creature capable of sowing death turning everything around him into ice. We immediately understand that it is the famous threat, to which the title of the film refers.
A few moments later, we find the Spengler family in the present, in the heart of New York, hunting ghosts at the wheel of their Ectomobile. But things get tough for the youngest, Phoebe, who is now banned from working for the Ghostbusters. Uno real betrayal for the teenager, who at the same time meets a young girl, half human and half ghost, with whom he becomes close. After a good hour spent in their company, the famous ice threat reappears, and everyone will have to fight against it to prevent it from destroying the city.
Should you go see it at the cinema?
This return of the Ghostbusters saga to the cinema follows in the footsteps of the previous film, clearly targeting a family audience looking for good-natured entertainment. This episode, while ambitious, comes across a predictable narrative where the big bad is revealed with a bang right from the start, before disappearing in the twists and turns of the plot only to reappear in the final act.
Meanwhile we still find pleasure in meeting these old and new faces (even if Bill Murray wonders what he’s doing there since he has nothing to play with), starting with Mckenna Grace, a true highlight of the revival of the saga. His relationship with his ghostly friend, although tinged with adolescent stereotypes, strikes a chord and adds an appreciable emotional dimension to the story. On the other hand, the presence of veterans appears to be anecdotal, oscillating between a somewhat heavy nostalgic homage and a decorative use, without real substance.
For long-time fans, this sequel does not reinvent the wheel and might even prove superfluous if the previous part had failed to convince. However, for a younger audience or less attached to the canons of the series, The threat of ice offers a pleasant adventure for the whole family, punctuated by funny moments and nods to the glorious past of the franchise, including the return of some ghosts well known to fans.
