HBO announces casting for Harry Potter series

Children aged 9-11, resident in the UK or Ireland, can audition for Harry Potter, Ron Weasley or Hermione Granger

It’s happening! HBO announced, this Monday (9), the opening of the selection for the protagonists of the new adaptation of Harry Potternow in the form of a series for Max, Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform.

On the franchise’s official social media profile, an announcement says that children between 9 and 11 years old in April 2025, and residing in the United Kingdom or Ireland, can test for a living Harry Potter, Ron Weasley or Hermione Grangerthe trio of protagonists of the story created by J.K. Rowling. Registrations must be made on the website indicated by the child’s parents or guardians. Check it out:

What we already know about the series Harry Potter?

Second Casey BloysHBO’s chief content officer, the idea for the series Harry Potter is to take advantage of the opportunity to expand the format to faithfully adapt the seven books released by J.K. Rowling between 1997 and 2007.

To this end, Warner Bros. Discovery is committing to a ten-year plan that aims to introduce the boy’s story to new generations. HarryPotter who, at the age of 11, discovers he is a wizard and enters an enchanted world by becoming one of the students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

However, in his first year at school, the boy – who mysteriously defeated one of the greatest dark wizards when he was still just a baby – discovers that his new universe can be very dangerous, with evil forces acting in secret to conquer not only the wizarding world, but that of humans as well.

So far, there is no name set to direct the adaptation, but the Deadline recently revealed that the screenwriters Francesca Gardiner (Succession, His Dark Materials), Tom Moran (The Devil’s Hour) and Kathleen Jordan (Bounty Hunters) are in the running for the position.

Is JK Rowling involved?

In order to maintain fidelity in the adaptation, the series Harry Potter will have JK Rowling as executive producer, despite the controversies the writer has been involved in in recent years, such as her strong campaign against transgender people.

In October of last year, inclusive, Rowling she even said that she would be happy to be arrested for transphobia: “I would happily accept serving two years if the alternative were [aceitar] the forced discourse and denial of the reality and importance of sex”wrote on X, ex-Twitter. “Go to court, I encourage it. It will be more fun than any red carpet I’ve been on.”.

When announcing the series, Casey Bloys ignored the accusations against Rowling: “This is a very online conversation, with a lot of nuances and complications, and it’s not something we’re going to get into”he declared. “Our priority is what’s on screen. Obviously, the story of ‘Harry Potter’ is incredibly affirming and positive, about love and self-acceptance. That’s our priority: what’s on screen.”.

Who will be in the cast?

As of now, no names have been announced for the cast of the series. Harry Potterbut we know that the news should not include the return of actors from the film franchise, even in different roles than they played before.

Including, Daniel Radcliffewho played the protagonist in all eight films, has already made it clear that he has no interest in participating in the new adaptation: “My understanding is that they’re trying to start from scratch and I’m sure whoever’s doing it (…) probably doesn’t want to have to figure out how to get old Harry to make a cameo in this series.”and”, he joked.

When does it premiere?

Recently, David Zaslavpresident of Warner Bros. Discovery, revealed that he already has a premiere date for the series: “We look forward to sharing a decade of new stories with fans around the world on Max. Our intention is to launch in 2026he declared.

“We’re not shy about being very excited about this series. The last film came out over a dozen years ago. I was in London a few weeks ago and spent some time talking to JK [Rowling] and his team. Both sides are excited to bring this franchise back together. Our conversations have been great, and I couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come.”he said again.
