And what Parasites ?

Parasites is Sébastien Vaniček’s first feature film. The 34-year-old director, who has previously worked on numerous short films, offers here a survival with a very effective concept. The story (co-written with Florent Bernard) follows Kaleb (Théo Christine), a young man who returns to his suburban building a spider bought on the black market. Except that the animal in question is not made to evolve in this type of environment and, when faced with danger, has the ability to multiply rapidly and become increasingly larger.

It doesn’t take long for the spider to escape. And while Kaleb is busy managing personal matters with his sister Manon (Lisa Nyarko) who wants to renovate their apartment to sell it, and her ex-friend Jordy (Finnegan Oldfield) came to the aid of the latter, the building soon found itself infested with spiders. By the time they realize it, it will almost be too late. Kaleb, Manon and Jordy, but also Lila (Sofia Lesaffre) and Mathys (Jérôme Niel) will then have to do everything to leave the buildingdealing with these spiders, a fascist neighbor, and the police enforcing a quarantine.

How much is it worth?

In the spider movie genre, we generally tend to focus on bad characters. But Parasites it’s anything but, thanks to Sébastien Vaniček’s serious approach. The director delivers above all a scary movie, intelligently filming one of the most disturbing animals we know – yet so little used by cinema (at least qualitatively). A concern combined with the idea of confinementwhich he then remembers Rec (2008), which saw zombies infest a building.

Of course, not everything is perfect Parasites and we can find some things to complain about in the writing of the ending. But the scenario remains coherent enough, and Vaniček’s direction intelligent enough, that it can take advantage very good entertainment. It must be said that visually, Parasites impress with these spiders sometimes filmed up closecapable of slowly exiting the victim’s body in this way facehuggerAlien. Sébastien Vaniček also makes an obvious reference to the famous horror film, placing a spider a few centimeters from Manon’s face.

Subtext cleverly presented

From that moment on, the fear of the characters becomes that of the spectators, thanks to an easy identification with these protagonists. And addingt in the subtext of his film a clear discussion on the fear of the unknown, of the foreigner and of what is considered repugnant (the spider is a metaphor for the crime of somatic features), Sébastien Vaniček gives Parasites the depth needed to linger, while maintaining the primary goal of providing true entertainment.

He proves it too genre cinema in France, more precisely horror, can be of quality. Obviously what we have been saying for some time, even if not everything is recommendable (see review by Miners). What if we could see films in this category that tend more towards the social aspect (like The cloudby the way an excellent film), Parasites it goes in another direction. A choice that remains judicious and which allows us to close the year successfully beautiful emotionsand the certainty of doing some nightmaresthe only criticism we will make of Sébastien Vaniček.
